China Eastern turned a regular flight into a Toy Story 5 experience

A domestic flight from Shanghai to Chengdu has suddenly become one of the most charming film promotions in China this summer. On June 13, China Eastern Airlines transformed MU5411, a regular Shanghai Pudong to Chengdu Tianfu flight, into a limited Toy Story 5-themed experience, sending more than 210 passengers into the air inside what was basically a moving Pixar set.

The timing was no accident. Toy Story 5 opened in Chinese theaters on June 19, and the themed flight arrived just days before the release, with movie bloggers, fans and invited guests flying to Chengdu ahead of related premiere activities. Instead of keeping the campaign inside cinemas or shopping malls, China Eastern and Disney took it into one of the most unexpected places for movie marketing: a real passenger aircraft.

The plane itself already had Disney history. The aircraft used for the flight was China Eastern’s “Toy Story Happy Holiday” themed Airbus A330, first launched in 2018 in partnership with Shanghai Disney Resort. The exterior still carries the original Woody and Buzz Lightyear livery, making it one of China’s most recognizable Disney-themed aircraft. But for Toy Story 5, the cabin was refreshed for the new film.

Inside, the theming went far beyond a few posters. Overhead bins, tray tables, headrest covers and even the cabin ceiling were covered with movie visuals. Classic characters like Woody, Buzz Lightyear and Jessie appeared alongside new Toy Story 5 characters, including the smart tablet Lilypad and other tech-flavored toys. That detail matters because the new movie’s story centers on a very modern childhood problem: traditional toys trying to compete with screens.

In other words, the airplane was not just decorated with Toy Story characters. It was quietly turning the movie’s core theme into a physical experience. Passengers were sitting inside a cabin where old-school toys, new gadgets, nostalgia and modern travel all collided at 30,000 feet.

The experience started before takeoff. At Shanghai Pudong Airport, China Eastern set up a dedicated themed check-in area with character standees, plush decorations and commemorative boarding passes. Some passengers showed up in cosplay as Woody, Bo Peep and Forky, turning the airport into a mini fan convention before boarding even began.

During the flight, the airline added custom Toy Story 5 in-flight announcements, themed photo moments and limited gift packs with character merchandise and blind-box-style souvenirs. Free in-flight Wi-Fi also allowed passengers to watch the new trailer onboard. After landing, the experience continued at Chengdu Tianfu Airport, where elevators and baggage claim areas were dressed in Toy Story 5 visuals.

For China Eastern, this was more than a cute one-day stunt. It fits into a larger “aviation + IP + cultural tourism” strategy the airline has been building for years through Disney-themed aircraft and travel products. Alongside the flight, China Eastern also promoted linked travel packages involving Shanghai Disney Resort tickets, student ticket products and multi-city aviation bundles.

That is the smart part of the campaign. A themed aircraft is not just advertising space; it is a moving tourism funnel. It connects the flight, the film, the airport, the destination and the theme park economy into one shareable experience. For fans, it feels like a limited memory. For the airline and Disney, it turns an ordinary route into content, merchandise desire and travel motivation at the same time.

China has seen plenty of branded pop-ups, themed cafés and mall installations, but a full movie-themed flight still feels rare enough to make people stop scrolling. It also taps into something Toy Story has always been good at: making adults feel like they are allowed to be kids again for a moment.

Most people book a flight hoping it is on time, quiet and painless. These passengers got Woody, Buzz, exclusive souvenirs, themed boarding passes and a Pixar cabin before they even reached Chengdu. Not a bad upgrade for a domestic route.
