At banquets in Fujian, you might notice something unexpected: many women keep their motorcycle helmets on at the table.
At banquets in Fujian, you might notice something unexpected: many women keep their motorcycle helmets on at the table.
This isn’t a gimmick—it’s part of everyday life for Hui’an women.
Hui’an women come from Hui’an County in Quanzhou, Fujian, and are one of the most culturally distinctive female groups in China. For centuries, they’ve been known for their resilience and independence, often taking on physically demanding work like fishing, farming, and construction while men worked at sea. Their traditional outfit is instantly recognizable: colorful headscarves, short blue jackets, wide black pants, and silver waist chains—designed to handle strong coastal winds and long hours of labor.
A key part of that outfit used to be the wide straw hat, worn almost all day for protection against sun and wind—even during meals or banquets. Today, some women still wear these straw hats, especially older generations.
But for many, the straw hat has naturally evolved into something more modern: the motorcycle helmet.
With motorbikes and e-bikes now central to daily life, helmets have taken over the same role. Many women head straight from riding to social gatherings like weddings or family banquets, and simply keep their helmets on—staying warm, blocking the wind, and keeping things effortless. 🏍️
So at these gatherings, you’ll see a unique scene: traditional coastal outfits paired with either straw hats or modern helmets, blending past and present in the most practical way.
It’s not about standing out—it’s just how life works here.
For Hui’an women, practicality has always come first. The helmet isn’t replacing tradition—it’s continuing it, just in a new form. 🪖
