McDonald's Opens China's First Ocean-Themed Restaurant in Shenzhen in Partnership With Marine Stewardship Council

McDonald's opened China's first ocean-themed restaurant in Shenzhen on October 27, 2026, partnering with the Marine Stewardship Council on sustainable design and ocean education.
McDonald's (麦当劳) opened China's first ocean-themed restaurant — the Shenzhen Wanghai Road Restaurant — on October 27, 2026, in a partnership with the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) (海洋管理委员会). The venue is designed around ocean conservation, incorporating recycled materials throughout its interiors and offering interactive educational exhibitions on ocean ecology and McDonald's sustainable sourcing practices.
The restaurant's interior features ocean-recycled plastic chairs, tables inlaid with recovered shell materials, and a 3D-printed art installation made from 7.7 kilograms of recycled plastic. Plans are in place for ongoing ocean science exhibitions and educational classes on the premises.
The restaurant's exterior display showcases children's drawings collected through a collaborative art campaign with Red Mangrove Forest (《红树林》), a local children's magazine. Children submitted ocean-themed artwork, which was incorporated into the building's outward-facing design.
The Shenzhen location functions as a permanent experiential space rather than a limited-time pop-up, embedding sustainability messaging directly into the dining environment. It marks McDonald's most publicly visible move in China to connect its seafood sourcing credentials — MSC certification covers sustainably caught wild fish — with consumer-facing education at the restaurant level.
