Duolingo’s chaotic green owl just pulled the most unexpected career move in China — it quit its job… and joined Meituan as a delivery rider 🛵💚
In the lead-up to the campaign, Duolingo started posting that its mascot had “resigned” due to burnout, even dropping a dramatic resignation letter. The internet ran with it, with brands jokingly trying to “recruit” the owl. Then around March 20, Meituan stepped in and officially “hired” it.
Now the owl shows up wearing Meituan’s signature yellow helmet (with kangaroo ears), riding an e-bike, delivering food… while still acting like your strict language coach. Think: handing you your order and immediately asking if you’ve done your lesson today 😭
The collab is built around a painfully relatable student scenario — studying makes you hungry, and ordering food becomes muscle memory. Campaign slogans basically say: “study and eat, both matter.”
Users can unlock the campaign by searching “Duolingo” inside the Meituan app, with limited-time merch drops tied to orders from brands like KFC, Burger King, and Haidilao. There’s even a collectible card system to redeem exclusive items like themed tissue boxes and accessories.
It quickly went viral, with people ordering just to get the merch — or to see the owl “deliver” their food.
A language app mascot becoming your food delivery guy? Only in China’s marketing universe 😂
