Big news from China’s high plateau: McDonald's has officially opened its first-ever store in Qinghai, making it the last province in China to finally get the golden arches. And yes — people really queued over two hours just to buy an ice-cream cone. 🍦😮
The new store opened in Xining’s Haihu New District and instantly turned into a city-wide event. It’s a standalone drive-thru restaurant with more than 200 seats, but capacity didn’t matter much on day one — lines stretched hundreds of meters, and social media was flooded with “Xining McDonald’s check-ins.” Some customers waited longer for a cone than for a full hotpot meal.
So why did Qinghai take this long? Several reasons. The province sits on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, where high altitude and harsh climate make cold-chain logistics expensive and complicated. Franchise approval in China is also notoriously strict, often taking 18–24 months, and adapting menus to local Muslim dietary habits added another layer of complexity. In the end, local authorities actively courted the brand, helping make the launch happen.
One detail netizens loved: at opening, the building featured a giant Ronald McDonald, but it was soon replaced by a baby snow leopard mascot — a nod to the snow leopard, a flagship and protected species of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Cute, symbolic, and very Qinghai. 🐆✨
