A Tianjin uncle jumps into the Haihe River and delivers the city’s best life philosophy
Spring might be arriving in northern China, but in Tianjin, the legendary river-diving uncles are still very much part of the city’s daily entertainment.
Spring might be arriving in northern China, but in Tianjin, the legendary river-diving uncles are still very much part of the city’s daily entertainment. 🌊😄
A recent viral clip shows a Tianjin uncle standing by the Haihe River chatting with a crowd before jumping into the water. Right before the dive, he delivers a line that perfectly captures the city’s vibe: “Ma qian bu qian de, lehe jiu wan le.” In other words: “Money or not, who cares — just have a good time.”
Scenes like this are classic Tianjin. For decades, locals — mostly retired uncles — have gathered along the Haihe River for winter swimming and casual diving. Many grew up playing in the river as kids and jokingly describe themselves as “amphibious people,” equally comfortable on land or in the water.
But the Tianjin version of the sport comes with a twist: comedy. Before jumping, some uncles give impromptu speeches to the crowd, quoting famous lines, teasing spectators, or delivering punchlines in the city’s signature witty style. The atmosphere often feels closer to a live comedy show than a sports event.
That attitude reflects Tianjin’s broader culture. As a historic port city famous for cross-talk comedy, Tianjin people are known across China for their humor and laid-back outlook on life. While other cities chase hustle and productivity, Tianjin locals often take pride in being the opposite — relaxed, sarcastic, and proudly “anti-involution.”
So whether it’s winter or early spring, these river-diving uncles aren’t chasing fame, records, or money.
They’re just chasing a good laugh.
