Taobao has unveiled a new generation of uniforms for its delivery riders, combining sleek design with upgraded functionality — and sparking widespread discussion online.
The uniforms feature a racing-inspired orange and black look, with reflective strips for night safety. Materials are on par with outdoor brands, using 3L composite fabric that is windproof, breathable, and water-repellent. Supporting gear has also been enhanced: delivery boxes now have a 43-liter capacity with anti-theft locks and insulation, while helmets received a complete safety upgrade.
What sets this initiative apart is the collaborative design process. Many riders (qishi, meaning knights) were involved in testing and feedback. For example, one suggestion to enlarge reflective strips was quickly implemented — making the final design more practical and inclusive.
Taobao Flash Sale announced that around one million active riders will receive the new uniform kits free of charge, including helmets and delivery boxes. This rollout is part of a broader effort to elevate the role of riders as “chengshi qishi” (city knights), emphasizing both safety and social recognition.
The project not only boosts brand visibility — with logos of Alibaba’s ecosystem across the gear — but also reflects a growing trend in China of treating frontline delivery workers with greater dignity and professional identity.
