For its third “Song of Mont” exhibition during Paris Fashion Week, contemporary Chinese designer brand @songmont_official brought the culture and craft of its home province, Shanxi, to Paris, and invited people from very different cultures to share them.
Among the guests were four actors from three countries. Lucas Bravo (@lucasnbravo), known worldwide as chef Gabriel in Netflix’s Emily in Paris. Audrey Tautou, one of the best-known faces of French cinema since Amélie. Shin Hae-sun (@shinhs831), the award-winning South Korean star of Mr. Queen. And Tontawan (@tontawan), the Thai actress who rose to fame in F4 Thailand.
In keeping with the exhibition’s name, Songmont paired its guests like duets. Lucas Bravo shared tea with Shin Hae-sun inside the exhibition, while Audrey Tautou and Tontawan met in a short film shot in a Paris vintage shop.
What connected them were the stories behind the bags, many of them passed down through generations of women. Songmont’s first bag was made by founder Fu Song’s mother, who then went back to their hometown in Shanxi and gathered the “Granny Team”, local artisans with an average age of 65, to stitch the early bags. The brand’s Spirits charms are based on the tiger hats Fu Song’s grandmother once made, which carried older generations’ wishes of love and protection for children.
At the centre of the exhibition stands an installation inspired by a traditional Shanxi pagoda, holding Songmont’s six signature collections. Each one carries a piece of Chinese heritage: Gather is based on the camel bags carried along the Silk Road, and Drippy Roof takes its curves from the eaves of a Tang Dynasty temple in Shanxi. Historically, the pagoda was one of the images through which the West imagined the East. In Paris, it became the place where guests stepped into Eastern culture themselves.
Songmont sums up its approach simply: understand your roots, live authentically in the present, and stay open to the wider world.
