Shanghai just got a new viral icon — and it’s literally a giant “messy” dog made of plants 🐶🌿

In April 2026, a 5.2-meter-tall West Highland White Terrier sculpture quietly appeared behind construction barriers at Suhewan MIXC World in Jing’an… and somehow still went viral before officially opening. People spotted it from a nearby pedestrian bridge, snapped photos, and within days, this “scruffy-looking” pup took over Xiaohongshu, Douyin, and Weibo.

The sculpture is actually part of the upcoming Shanghai International Flower Festival (Jing’an sub-venue), running from April 18 to May 10. It’s the centerpiece of a “cute pet garden” zone — built using 2,000–3,000 real plants. Think flowing needle grass for that perfectly chaotic fur, blue fescue limbs, succulent details, and a flower scarf that makes it look like your most extra pet ever.

What made it blow up? The vibe. It perfectly matches China’s current obsession with “潦草小狗” — that intentionally messy, fluffy, slightly unhinged cute aesthetic. Plus, from the right angle, you can frame the dog with Shanghai’s skyline in the background… instant viral shot.

Also, the location used to be a dog-friendly lawn, and the design was inspired by a real Westie that used to hang out there. So yes, pet owners are emotionally invested.

Best part? The whole festival is free. So now everyone’s planning their spring outing around a chaotic plant dog.
