Mahjong isn’t just a game in China — it’s basically the unofficial soundtrack of Chinese New Year 🀄 Four people, 144 tiles, dice rolling, aunties whispering strategy… it’s chaos, luck, and bonding all in one.
The game dates back centuries, evolving from early card games in the Tang and Ming eras into the modern 144-tile version we know today. Every tile has symbolism — winds for directions, red-green-white dragons for heaven-earth-human harmony. During Chinese New Year, families gather around the table not just to win, but to “manifest” a smoother, luckier year ahead.
And yes, McDonald’s China knows exactly what it’s doing.
For 2026 (Year of the Horse), McDonald’s China launched another limited-edition mahjong collection — this time in collaboration with My Little Pony. The full-size deluxe gift box dropped on February 10 via the McDonald’s app, priced at 888 RMB plus points, with only 3,988 sets available nationwide. It sold out fast. Naturally.
A mini plush mahjong set followed, available with a purchase top-up in stores and online, with 250,000 units released nationwide 🎁
This isn’t their first mahjong rodeo either — previous years included golden bamboo-themed tiles and even crossover IP versions.
At this point, McDonald’s China isn’t just selling burgers. It’s securing a seat at your New Year mahjong table 🍟✨
