Duolingo Launches "The Phonetic Collection" at New York Fashion Week to Highlight Luxury Brand Mispronunciation

Duolingo launched a seven-piece capsule collection at New York Fashion Week featuring phonetic pronunciations of luxury brands like Hermès and Givenchy.
Duolingo (多邻国) debuted a seven-piece capsule collection called "The Phonetic Collection" during New York Fashion Week on September 17, 2026, designed in partnership with Megan O'Cain. The collection features clothing, footwear and accessories embroidered, applied or printed with phonetic pronunciations of luxury brand names — including Hermès ("air-mess"), Givenchy ("zhee-vahn-shee"), Jacquemus, Moschino ("moh-skee-noh") and Loewe — turning a common source of social anxiety into wearable copy.
To mark the launch, Duolingo held a two-day immersive pop-up event in New York where selected pieces from the collection could be bid on using consecutive learning day streaks accumulated in the Duolingo app, rather than conventional purchase. The mechanic directly tied the fashion activation to the app's core retention feature.
The campaign was supported by research conducted with YouGov. According to that data, 62% of survey respondents said they were confident they could correctly pronounce Hermès, while the actual accuracy rate for that pronunciation was 15% — a gap the collection is built around.
The Phonetic Collection sits at the intersection of language education and fashion, using the persistent cultural anxiety around luxury brand pronunciation as its creative premise. By replacing price tags with streak counts and phonetic guides with garment embroidery, Duolingo reframes fluency as a form of cultural access — and positions its app as the tool that closes the gap between perceived and actual confidence.
