Duolingo Launches Shanghainese Course With City-Wide Offline Campaign Spanning Transit, Stores, and Pop-Up

Duolingo launched a 50-unit Shanghainese course backed by themed transit cards, branded partner stores, and a pop-up at Pudong Art Museum.
Duolingo (多邻国) has launched a Shanghainese (沪语) course on its platform comprising 50 units covering daily conversations and Shanghai dialect, including dialogue practice aimed at beginners. The course announcement came in September 2025, prompted in part by a platform survey in which over 30% of users expressed a desire to learn Shanghainese.
The launch is supported by an extensive offline activation across Shanghai. Duolingo recruited 10 local partner stores badged as "Duolingo Shanghainese-Friendly Stores," with dedicated signage, order benefits for customers, and an appearance by the brand's owl mascot Duo as a guest store manager for a day. The offline recruitment plan for partner stores began in September 2025.
In a partnership with Shanghai Public Transport Card (上海公交卡), the campaign extended into the city's transit network through Shanghainese-themed payment cards, themed buses, metro station digital screens, and branded bus stops. Additional marketing activities included the "Luo Hu Qian" and "Diu Hu Zhao" campaigns tied to the dialect theme. A limited-time pop-up at Pudong Art Museum (浦东美术馆), open from October 16 to 31, 2026, offered photo check-in opportunities for visitors.
The campaign reflects a broader pattern in China of language-learning and cultural-preservation initiatives being packaged as lifestyle marketing, blending educational content with city-specific identity and large-scale experiential touchpoints. By embedding the course into everyday transit infrastructure and neighbourhood retail, Duolingo positions Shanghainese learning as a community-facing activity rather than a purely digital one.
