Changyanning Turns Billboard Space Into Restroom Wayfinding Signage at Malls and Scenic Sites

Changyanning replaced traditional billboard ads with restroom wayfinding signs at malls and scenic spots, pairing directions with a two-step brand message.
Changyanning (肠炎宁), a Chinese gastrointestinal medicine brand, deployed outdoor billboard advertising at shopping malls and scenic areas during the 2026 peak tourist season that foregoes conventional product promotion in favour of practical restroom directions. The boards display messages such as "60 metres to the left, there is a public restroom" and "nearest restroom, 15 metres inside the main gate," paired with the brand tagline: "Don't worry about diarrhea, step one: go to the restroom, step two: Changyanning." The campaign was active on October 13, 2026.
Rather than advertising the product's efficacy directly, the creative uses the medium itself as a utility — turning a high-traffic, high-urgency moment into a brand encounter. The placement in tourist-heavy locations ties the message to a context — unfamiliar surroundings, disrupted routines, digestive stress — where the product's core use case is most salient.
The approach reflects a broader instinct in Chinese OOH advertising to earn attention by offering something useful rather than simply claiming it. In high-footfall tourist environments — where consumers are often navigating unfamiliar spaces — functional information carries inherent value, and the brand slots its message into a moment of genuine need rather than interrupting an unrelated one.
