Beijing’s “Black Puffer” Joke Just Turned Into a Real Beauty Pageant

If you’ve ever survived a Beijing winter, you already know the city has one official outfit: the black down jacket.

If you’ve ever survived a Beijing winter, you already know the city has one official outfit: the black down jacket. 🖤

For years, people have joked online that “Beijingers don’t do fashion — black puffers are the city uniform.” Well… someone decided to take that personally. On January 31, 2026, Beijing hosted its first-ever Black Down Jacket Beauty Pageant at a bar near Dazhongsi in Haidian. It was -5°C outside. Method dressing.

The idea came from a Douyin user who thought: what if we turn this meme into a real competition? Within a day, over 400 people joined the registration group. In just 10 days, the whole event was organized with help from Douyin’s youth creator program and local youth culture partners.

Rules were strict: pure black down jackets only. No wool coats. No “almost black.” Around 40 contestants walked an L-shaped red carpet and had three minutes to pitch their jacket. The 300+ audience members voted based on practicality, rarity, and aesthetics.

Highlights? A 169 RMB jacket with nine pockets that could fit an iPad and two 900ml drinks. An 8-year-old who said he’d worn his for two years — “a quarter of my life.” And the ultimate winner: a tiny dog in a black puffer. 🐶

The hashtag shot into Douyin’s Top 4 trending list, with hundreds of thousands of likes.

Turns out, Beijing’s winter uniform isn’t basic — it’s legendary. ❄️
