A mall in Ningbo, Zhejiang just turned one of China’s most relatable school memories into a real competition: secretly eating in class without getting caught by the teacher. 😭

On May 17, Ningbo Global Intime Department Store hosted its first “Sneak Eating Pao Fan Contest,” building a fake classroom inside the mall with desks, a blackboard, and a patrolling “teacher.” Contestants had to finish a bowl of Ningbo-style pao fan — a comforting rice-and-soup dish usually eaten with small side dishes — before the bell rang.

The rules felt painfully familiar. If the “teacher” caught you eating, you had to stand for 30 seconds and stop eating. Get caught three times and you were out. In the final round, contestants could even report each other to the teacher to eliminate opponents. Childhood classroom politics came back real fast. 🥢

The event was free to join and reportedly attracted more than 2,000 sign-ups, from kindergarten kids to retirees in their 60s and 70s. The winner, a local man in his 30s, took home a one-gram pure gold “golden rice grain” worth around 1,400 RMB.

But online, the kids completely stole the show. Some elementary school contestants moved so naturally that people joked this skill was already “written into their DNA.” Meanwhile, many adults were visibly nervous and kept getting caught almost immediately. 🏆
